Maker Project Description:
ZKPU is an open-source, decentralized hardware accelerator designed to optimize Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) computation for Ethereum L2 scaling, ZKML, and privacy-focused applications. Unlike traditional CPUs, GPUs, and proprietary ASICs, ZKPU is built on a RISC-V SoC with NVMe support, offering a cost-effective, power-efficient, and plug-and-play solution for both edge devices and data centers. Currently in the FPGA prototype stage, ZKPU demonstrates MSM acceleration over NVMe, proving its feasibility as a scalable and decentralized alternative to expensive, centralized solutions. By making ZKP computation faster and more accessible, ZKPU paves the way for mass adoption of zero-knowledge technology in Web3.
Which category best describes your Maker Project?:
Hardware Hack, FPGA Prototype
Project Inspiration & Impact:
I was inspired to create ZKPU after recognizing the computational bottlenecks in Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) generation, which are critical for Ethereum scaling, privacy, and decentralized applications. Existing solutions—CPUs, GPUs, and proprietary ASICs—are either too slow, too expensive, or too centralized, limiting the accessibility and scalability of ZK technology. With my background in ASIC design and storage acceleration, I saw an opportunity to build an open-source, decentralized, and cost-effective ZKP hardware accelerator. By leveraging NVMe integration and RISC-V architecture, ZKPU makes high-performance proof generation accessible to both individuals and enterprises. I hope ZKPU will democratize ZKP computation, enabling Ethereum developers, researchers, and innovators to build scalable, trustless, and decentralized applications without the barriers of high costs and centralized control. Ultimately, this project aims to accelerate Web3 adoption by making zero-knowledge proofs efficient and widely available.
Technical Details:
• Hardware: • FPGA Prototype: Xilinx VCU118 • RISC-V CPU: Integrated for flexible modular arithmetic computations • Data Transport: Standard NVMe interface for high-speed, low-latency communication • Software & Development Tools: • Chipyard – Open-source RISC-V SoC design framework • Python + nvme-cli – For interfacing and testing NVMe data transport • Verilog/SystemVerilog – RTL design for MSM acceleration • Vivado – FPGA synthesis and implementation • Proof-of-Concept Demonstration: • FPGA-based NVMe-MSM acceleration • Clock speed: 100MHz • Protocol: Standard NVMe commands
Setup Requirements:
• Space: A small table (approx. 2×2 ft or larger) to set up the FPGA board and mini PC. • Power Access: At least one power socket for the FPGA board and mini PC. • Internet Connection: Wired Ethernet or stable Wi-Fi for accessing the demo driver from GitHub. • Additional Hardware: A motherboard(with PCIe slot) running Ubuntu to demonstrate platform-agnostic NVMe integration.
Audience Interaction?:
Yes, my project encourages hands-on engagement and open discussions: 1. Live Demo: Attendees can run the driver themselves on the provided setup and see MSM computation results in real time, demonstrating the device’s speed and efficiency. 2. Use Case Brainstorming: I invite the audience to explore new applications for ZKP hardware—particularly in edge computing and cloud environments—and discuss how widespread access to ZKP acceleration could impact various industries. 3. Community-Driven ASIC Development: I’d love to brainstorm with attendees about the potential of a community-driven ASIC project, leveraging UC Berkeley’s Chipyard to develop open-source, decentralized ZK hardware for Web3. This interactive session will not only showcase the technical capabilities of ZKPU but also spark collaborative innovation in the ZKP ecosystem.
Has this project been displayed before?:
No
