I know that this topic will have some real tensions around it. I am confident that I can create a space where people can express their views and hear each others’ views without blame. A key part of that will be locating the experiment in a fictitious context. I expect it will feel real, and surface some real issues, but without inviting in issues from any actual organisation. Also, I am open to iterating this idea in conversation with you 🙂

Workshop Title:
Informal relationships and their impact in web3 – a participative experiment
Workshop Duration:
90 Minutes
Brief Workshop Description:
How decentralised is the real influence in web3 projects? Be the researcher, and the subject, in this live lab. Making the invisible visible, this is a participant-sourced simulation to investigate how relationships between key players influence culture and outcomes in web3 projects. Web3 projects have made incredible advances in on-chain governance and community deliberation. Despite this, the relationships, and power dynamics between influential people have an outsized impact on what actually happens. Although those relationships mostly play out in private, their impact leaks into the public. In this workshop, you will contribute to a live simulation of a fictitious but typical web3 project. With group members enacting typical participants, everyone will experience the kinds of interactions that occur in public forums and calls. Then, you will get to eavesdrop on the kinds of conversations that are held in private. You’ll have a chance to synthesise some insights that surface from the simulation. This will be a baby step that may only raise questions like… What patterns are present? What impactful dynamics can not be addressed by tech? How might they be addressed – including in how you show up yourself?
Target Audience:
Anyone curious about informal relationships and power dynamics in web3 projects and their impact on governance and outcomes. You’ll probably be willing to get fully involved and an interactive workshop. And motivated to contribute to regenerative relationships, even in the presence of conflict.
Experience & Qualifications:
I have been leading interactive workshops like this for over twenty years. They have been in conferences, hackathons, meetups, and within organisations, often around tech, science, open source, open data and internet governance. At times, I have worked with groups where there is considerable tension, facilitating listening and seeing things through each others’ eyes. My approach owes much to a lot of training in Psychodrama.
